Wyndham Road Footbridge Demolition

Update 15th May 2026

Wyndham Road Footbridge Replacement - Have Your Say!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why is the bridge being replaced?

The existing Wyndham Road footbridge is owned and maintained by National Highways. They have advised that the bridge is now too low to meet modern standards, is in poor condition, and would be very expensive to repair.

At one stage, the plan was to remove the bridge without replacing it. However, after strong community support and positive discussions between local residents, community representatives and National Highways, a proposal has now been developed to build a replacement bridge.

So the bridge is being replaced โ€” thatโ€™s good news, right?

Yes โ€” this is a very positive step forward but.

National Highways have worked with local groups and stakeholders to develop a proposal for a replacement footbridge. However, the project will only go ahead if there is enough local support.

That means it is really important for local people to share their views.

Why canโ€™t National Highways just build the new bridge?

The space available at Wyndham Road is very limited. Because of this, it is not possible to build a new bridge that fully meets current accessibility standards without major changes to the surrounding area.

National Highways therefore want to make sure local people have the opportunity to review the plans and comment on the proposed design before any final decision is made.

Community support is essential if the replacement bridge is to go ahead.

What does โ€œnot compliant with current accessibility standardsโ€ mean?

The proposed bridge has been designed on a โ€œlike-for-likeโ€ basis. This means it will be very similar in size and slope to the existing bridge.

The new bridge will:

  • Be no steeper than the current bridge
  • Be slightly higher to improve clearance over the road
  • Include taller safety railings

Representatives from local schools, nursery groups and Disability Interest Group Salisbury (DIGS) have been involved in discussions with National Highways and have supported the proposed design.

They also recognised that replacing the bridge would provide a safer and more accessible option than the alternative routes many people would otherwise need to use.

How long will the work take?

Replacing a bridge over the A36 is a major engineering project.

The demolition and reconstruction work is currently planned for 2028 and is expected to take around nine months in total. This programme also includes work to replace the Victoria Road footbridge.

Is the replacement definitely going ahead?

If there is strong local support, National Highways have confirmed that they intend to build the replacement bridge.

As with any publicly funded infrastructure project, plans can change, but National Highways have advised that funding has been identified and the project is included within their future programme.
